LESSON 16: ANALYZE A SAMPLE DEBATE SPEECH

Speaker: Affirmative Team – Speaker 2
Motion: This House believes that social media does more harm than good.
Debate Speech

Madam Chair, Members of the House, and friends,
Imagine having hundreds of online “friends” but still feeling lonely. That’s what happens to many kids and teenagers today. They scroll, they post, they “like”—but in the end, they feel sad, left out, or stressed. Social media promised friendship, but instead it often brings worry, pressure, and confusion.

My teammate has already shown how social media hurts our mental health. I will add two more problems: fake information and weaker real-life communication.

First, let me reply to the other team. They said that social media helps people connect. But do these connections really make us happy? A study showed that while most teens go online every day, almost half feel lonelier after using social media. That’s not a real connection—that’s online emptiness.

Now, my first argument is about fake information. Social media spreads lie faster than the truth. Fake news, silly health tips, and wild rumors move around the internet much faster than facts. This can confuse people and even be dangerous.

My second argument is about communication. Real conversations are deep and meaningful. But social media shortens everything into memes, likes, or quick comments. Respect and listening get lost. Instead of kind discussion, we often see fighting and rude words.

So, I ask: do these harms sound like benefits? Clearly, the damage is stronger than the good.

I urge you to support this motion: social media does more harm than good.
I rest my case.

Speech Questions

Opening Analysis

What type of hook did the speaker use at the beginning?

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Was it strong and interesting? Why or why not?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Rebuttal Analysis
3. What idea from the other team did the speaker argue against?
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

4. Did the rebuttal use facts or logic? Was it effective?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Argument Development
5. What were the speaker’s two main arguments?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

6. Were the examples convincing and easy to understand? Why or why not?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Language and Persuasion
7. Find three strong words or phrases the speaker used to be persuasive.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Closing Evaluation
8. How did the speaker finish the speech? (e.g. call to action, reminder, warning)
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

9. Was anything weak or unclear in the ending? What could be improved?

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
