<h2 style="text-align:center;">LESSON 17: HOW DO DEBATE JUDGES GIVE SCORES?</h2>In competitive debate, judges carefully listen to each speaker and give them a score based on how well they present their arguments. They use a 1-7 scoring system (where 1 is very poor, 4 is average, and 7 is excellent) to rate each category. Your final score depends on how well you perform in four key areas: Manner, Method, Material, and Teamwork. The highest-scoring team wins, but judges also pick 1 debater from each team to win the "best debater” award!Read the information below. Judges will ask themself: Did the speaker use a clear and engaging voice? Were they confident? Did they respect the other team? Did he/she use their notes well? Did the student body language and make eye contact?   </li><li>Method (30% of your score) – This is about how well your speech is structured, including organization, timing, and how smoothly arguments are presented. Judges will ask themselves:  Was the speech well-organized and easy to follow? Did the speaker manage their time effectively? Did they have a main argument and examples? Did they use good vocabulary?   </li><li>Material (35% of your score) – This focuses on the quality of your arguments, evidence, and examples to support your points. Judges will ask themselves:  Were the arguments well-supported? Did the speaker use strong evidence? Did they use reliable websites to find information? Did the speaker research the topic?   </li></ul>Teamwork (15% of your score) – This measures how well team members work together, support each other, and respond to opposing arguments. Judges will ask themselves: Did the team coordinate well? Did they support each other and rebuttals effectively?
